Nicole Owren-Wiest Weighs in on Proposal to Shift Audit Responsibility From Government to Federal Contractors

Nicole J. Owren-Wiest, a partner in Wiley Rein’s Government Contracts Practice, was quoted extensively in a Compliance Week article published July 29 about a proposed Department of Defense rule that would transfer the responsibility of certain business systems audits from the government to federal contractors.  Ms. Owren-Wiest said that the rule would “increase the burden on many contractors and also potentially increase risk,” however contractors that have been waiting for the government to conduct audits might welcome the rule change.  “For contractors that haven’t had their systems reviewed either at all, or for many years, and are on a waitlist for [Defense Contract Audit Agency] to do their system reviews, this could be a benefit for them.”
