Michael Toner Weighs in on Campaign Options for Chris Christie and Other Potential Presidential Candidates

The Philadelphia Inquirer
December 2, 2014

Michael E. Toner, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in an article published December 1 in The Philadelphia Inquirer about the aspirations of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and other potential 2016 presidential candidates, including possible presidential campaign fundraising options leading up to 2016.

According to the article, Mr. Toner said there is an incentive for presidential candidates to create campaign committees in early January or early April of next year, maximizing the amount of time candidates have to raise money before they have to disclose their fundraising figures to the Federal Election Commission (FEC).  Mr. Toner, a former Chairman of the FEC, noted that if Mr. Christie opted to wait until April to file campaign paperwork, he could still create a federal leadership political action committee that would allow him to raise money for political travel.
