Wiley Rein's Michael Toner Comments on Politicians' Tax Complications

Michael Toner, co-chair of the Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, appeared on NPR’s “Marketplace” to discuss tax problems encountered by politicians.  Mr. Toner explained that some politicians can fall into tax quandaries because they may have different types of corporations or entities which can cause confusion depending on what kind of business they’re doing and where they’re located. He added that even with background checks and paperwork, a presidential transition team may not catch every potential problem. “It’s tremendous pressure. It’s very difficult. And you’ve just won a national election and been through an exhausting campaign, and now turning, really on a dime, to this short period of time to make these decisions,” Mr. Toner said.
