Jan Baran Discusses Super PACs in Iowa
Election Law & Government Ethics Practice co-chair Jan Baran was interviewed by Bloomberg on the new trend of super PACs funding negative political. Super PACs are the independent expenditure committees that can raise and spend unlimited money to support or oppose political candidates as long as they do not directly coordinate with the campaign.
Bloomberg reports that a political action committee called Restore Our Future ran more than $1.2 million of negative ads in Iowa, aimed primarily at GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. The article adds that “super PACs backing specific candidates spent at least $5 million on ads through Jan. 2, compared with $5.6 million spent by the candidates.”
“When several of the campaigns don't have much money, that makes a difference,” said Mr. Baran.
