Jan Baran Comments on Supreme Court Ruling Against Foreign National Campaign Donations
The ruling was a summary affirmation upholding a lower court’s decision in Bluman, et al. v. Federal Election Commission. Roll Call reports that two foreign nationals argued that preventing them from donating to political campaigns “suppressed the First Amendment rights of foreigners who legally live and work in the United States.”
“This is probably going to settle that particular issue for the foreseeable issue,” said Mr. Baran. “It’s a very one-day thing.”
Foreign nationals, with the exception of permanent residents, have been barred from making political donations, though some thought the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision left uncertainty before the latest ruling.
