Jan Baran Talks about Political Fundraising and Super PACs on "The Diane Rehm Show"

The Diane Rehm Show
July 6, 2012

Jan Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein's Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was a guest on "The Diane Rehm Show" to discuss political fundraising in the 2012 election cycle.

Mr. Baran was joined in the discussion by Reid Wilson, editor-in-chief of National Journal Hotline and Margie Omero president and founder of Momentum Analysis, a Democratic public opinion research firm.  Mr. Baran pointed out that so far in 2012 the total amount of election money raised by the candidates is on pace to fall short of the total spent in 2008. That includes President Obama and Mitt Romney, who raised less money in the Republican primary than he did four years ago. When Super PACs are included, the amount of money raised so far in 2012 is very close to 2008.

"I'm not convinced unprecedented amounts will be raised this year," said Mr. Baran.  "The total amount raised thus far is about the same as in 2008.  Where the money is being raised and being spent, differs. There is more money so far in the Super PACs and independent spending and we don't know how it will shake out until the November election."
