Michael Toner Argues in USA Today Op-Ed Romney Should Not Release More Tax Returns

USA Today
July 19, 2012

Michael Toner, co-chair of Wiley Rein's Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, published an opinion article in USA Today outlining why Mitt Romney should not release more than the two years of tax returns he has already promised. Mr. Toner, a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, noted that with the economy visibly faltering, the tax debate is largely being used by Democrats to change the subject away from an economy that has suffered eight percent unemployment for 41 consecutive months - the longest stretch since the Great Depression.

"Gov. Romney has gone well beyond what is required as there is no legal obligation that a presidential candidate release any tax returns," Mr. Toner writes.  "He offers an astonishingly broad and deep look at his personal financial affairs. His 2010 return and the 2011 estimate numbered over 500 pages, complete with all schedules and appendices. The final 2011 tax return will be equally detailed.  In 2008, Sen. John McCain disclosed two full years of his tax returns. This was not deemed controversial."
