Kirk Nahra Discusses Cloud Data Storage Services
Kirk J. Nahra, chair of Wiley Rein’s Privacy Practice and co-chair of the Health Care Practice, was quoted by Modern Healthcare in a November 28 article, discussing the importance of paying attention to contract details when choosing a cloud storage plan for data.
According to the article, the U.S. health care industry began using cloud computing for some uses a few years ago. In a recent incident involving a claims-management software company, the workers’ compensation and liability insurance records of about 1.5 million individuals became accessible to anyone using Google and a few search commands, because data had been moved to a cloud provider without barring access to unauthorized users. “If your goal is to get that service as cheaply as you possibly can, that’s essentially blind trust,” Mr. Nahra said, adding that to be safe, due diligence is necessary. “You should have some idea of what they’re doing,” he said.
“It was Reagan who said, ‘Trust but verify,’” said Mr. Nahra.
