Michael Toner Discusses Partisan Use of FEC Complaints

Roll Call
August 27, 2015

Michael E. Toner, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in an article published yesterday in Roll Call about the partisan use of Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaints.

According to the article, FEC complaints, which are easy to file, are increasingly being used by partisan operatives to slam political opponents and raise money for candidates. Mr. Toner, former chairman of the FEC, said that historically the filing of complaints has not been an established campaign tactic by the national political parties.

“A general truce was in place for a number of years as both parties realized it wasn’t in their interest,” Mr. Toner said. “That truce is breaking down.”
