Tim Brightbill Comments on Commerce Department Investigation into Imported Wood from China

Law360
December 14, 2016

Timothy C. Brightbill, a partner in Wiley Rein’s International Trade Practice, was quoted in a December 12 Law360 article regarding the U.S. Department of Commerce announcement of their investigation into Chinese hardwood plywood imports. The inquiry stems from a petition by the U.S.-based Coalition for Fair Trade of Hardwood Plywood alleging that these products are illegally subsidized by the Chinese government and are being sold at less than fair market value in the United States. According to the article, the International Trade Commission, which is part of Commerce, expects to make its preliminary determination on or before January 3.

“The domestic industry is encouraged that Commerce is moving ahead with these important investigations,” said Mr. Brightbill, counsel for the coalition. “We’re looking forward to the full investigations because we think they’ll show a variety of unfair trade practices that have harmed the U.S. industry for more than 15 years.”
