Obama Administration Continues Promotion of National Strategy for Electronic Stewardship

The Obama Administration is moving forward with its “National Strategy for Electronic Stewardship.”  Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the General Services Administration (GSA) have been touring recycling facilities nationwide to promote the Strategy, which encourages environmentally-sensitive electronics purchasing and recycling.

GSA, the agency tasked with purchasing for the federal government, is following through on its Strategy commitment to remove products that are not ENERGY STAR qualified or EPEAT registered from government-wide information technology acquisition contracts.  GSA aims to update its regulations and guidance documents by the end of next month to establish agency-wide best practices for electronic stewardship.

By implementing this Strategy, the Administration hopes to use the federal government's sizeable purchasing power to promote the development of more efficient and sustainable electronic products and to create jobs through the expansion of the electronics recycling industry.
