WRF’s Jan Baran to Serve on Governor Gilmore's Government Finance Reform Commission

Washington, DC—Governor Jim Gilmore today appointed 25 people to serve on the Governor's Commission on Government Finance Reform for the 21st Century, including Wiley, Rein & Fielding partner Jan Witold Baran, a former U.S. Ambassador and Chairman of  the U.S. Delegation to the 1992 World Administrative Radio Conference.

The Governor's commission will recommend reforms in Virginia's state and local tax structure, including Constitutional amendments. The Governor's appointments include five members of the General Assembly, five representatives of local governments, and several representatives from the private sector.

"I have selected a highly prestigious group of individuals representing all perspectives from the public and private sector to address important reform issues facing Virginia," Governor Gilmore said. "I have confidence that these distinguished Virginians will give the Commonwealth's tax structure a thorough study and will recommend needed reforms in the way government taxes hardworking people and spends their money."

The Commission will be chaired by former 74th District Congressman and Chairman of the House Commerce Committee Thomas J. Bliley, who also served as Mayor of the City of Richmond and Chairman of the Virginia Municipal League. Congressman Bliley currently is Senior Advisor for Government Relations and Public Policy at Collier Shannon Scott in Washington, D.C. Ashley L. Taylor, an attorney with Troutman, Sanders, Mays & Valentine in Richmond and former Deputy Attorney General of Virginia, will serve as Vice-Chairman.

The Commission was established by Executive Order No. 75. The Commission's first meeting will be held July 25, at 10:00 am, in the conference room of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, 901 E. Byrd Street, West Tower, Riverfront Plaza, 20th Floor, in Richmond.
