Wiley Rein & Fielding's John Kamp Co-Authors Primer on Direct to Consumer Drug Advertising

February 15, 2006

Washington, DC -Wiley Rein & Fielding attorney John F. Kamp, a recognized leading advocate of drug marketing issues and executive director of the Coalition for Healthcare Communication, and Wayne L. Pines, a former FDA associate commissioner for public affairs, have authored DTC Advertising and Promotion: The Changing Environment.  Recently published by FDAnews, the book examines the history of DTC advertising and its uncertain future.

Focusing on the current state of DTC advertising (including the possibility of a moratorium on such promotions), industry responses and Congressional proposals, the book includes chapters on FDA guidance and policies, Federal Trade Commission views, industry guidelines and legislative views.  Also included is a summary of the most recent FDA survey on DTC advertising, which reinforces the FDA view that DTC advertising has value and is not causing harm to either patients or the public health.

The book also contains reprints of the leading articles on DTC from academic, legal and health policy institutions, including FDA policy and research documents. In addition, it includes all the available public testimony from witnesses at the November 1-2, 2004 FDA DTC hearings.
