Wiley Rein’s Keith S. Watson Honored for Pro Bono Activities in South Africa
At a Washington DC ceremony held on April 30 in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, Wiley Rein attorney Keith S. Watson was honored with a service award from the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA) for his longstanding commitment to pro bono work in South Africa. The ceremony and the award were co-sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
For the past four years, Mr. Watson has played an integral role supporting and coordinating a Commercial Law Program, which provides training and mentoring in the practicalities of commercial law to attorneys in Africa who have historically had limited opportunities to practice commercial law. As a volunteer attorney for the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP), which recruits experienced attorneys to provide pro bono legal services in many countries, Mr. Watson has helped over 300 lawyers receive training in South Africa, Tanzania and Botswana.
VEGA is the world’s largest consortium of economic growth volunteer-based organizations serving developing countries. Mr. Watson is ISLP’s representative on the VEGA board of directors and is a member of its Executive Committee.
Several other senior-level Wiley Rein attorneys have also provided pro bono assistance to various ISLP projects.
Mr. Watson joined Wiley Rein in 1992 as a partner in its Insurance Coverage Group and is presently of counsel to the firm.
