The Legal 500 US Names Wiley Rein's Copyright Group Among the Country's Best
The 2011 edition of The Legal 500 US includes Wiley Rein's Copyright Group in its rankings of the nation's top practices and recommends the work of practice chair Bruce G. Joseph and partners Thomas W. Kirby and Andrew G. McBride. The directory says the Group "provides 'superior service' in the copyright law space, recently representing high technology companies in copyright infringement cases."
The publisher describes Mr. Joseph as "a litigator whose 'negotiation abilities are superior,'" and notes that he "successfully represented Verizon Wireless before the ASCAP [Rate Court], which granted judgment that wireless technology devices do not require a public performance license for downloading or playing of music ringtones." Kudos are also extended to Mr. McBride, who is praised as an "excellent litigator." Legal 500 notes that Messrs. Joseph and McBride served as counsel to Ericsson in litigation also in relation to setting license fees for music performances implicated in ringtones.
The directory commends Mr. Kirby for having "successfully achieved a $15m-plus copyright infringement settlement for publishers of professional newsletter and periodicals, in relation to subscribers multiplying a single electronic subscription into many." It goes on to note that Mr. Kirby also is "defending Supermedia, a major media and publishing company which sells print and internet advertising to SMEs, against alleged infringement of hundreds of yellow pages advertisements."
The Legal 500 directory aims to provide independent, unbiased commentary on the leading law firms and lawyers in the most important legal marketplaces in the world. The research for the editorial sections is based on the combined opinions of the many lawyers interviewed, commentary from corporate clients, and analysis of deals or contentious issues.
