Insurance Partner Cara Tseng Duffield Named a Law360 “Rising Star”
Wiley Rein partner Cara Tseng Duffield has been named a “Rising Star” by Law360, which pointed to the “great success” she has achieved in her representation of major insurance carriers. The annual “Rising Stars” honor goes to the “top legal talent under 40,” including five insurance attorneys.
Ms. Duffield is a standout member of Wiley Rein’s Insurance Practice, which Law360 called “top-notch” and has recognized as a “Group of the Year” for the past two years.
In a March 22 profile, Law360 noted that Ms. Duffield scored a major appellate court win in September 2012, defending a large insurer against a multi-million dollar excess directors and officers (D&O) liability claim. An appellate victory she won in August 2012 for another major insurance company vacated a district court’s multi-million dollar judgment against the insurer in a case arising from a car accident.
Ms. Duffield also helps insurers resolve claims through mediation and settlements and monitors underlying cases her clients have agreed to cover. She said that aspect of her work helps her see what attorneys in other areas of the legal profession are up to.
“It’s a lot more insight into the industry than I would have expected to have as a lawyer in private practice,” she told Law360.
She added that her love of insurance law stems in part from the variety of cases she handles and her interactions with industry clients. “They approach things very rationally, and that’s really such a pleasure to deal with,” she said.
When asked what advice she would give young attorneys who might be seeking rising-star status themselves, Ms. Duffield emphasized the importance of finding mentors, particularly in specialty practices such as insurance law. She said she’s been lucky to work with such a “collaborative practice” at Wiley Rein.
“Being able to ask questions of, and tap into the experience of, the attorneys in this practice group [has] made all the difference,” she said.
