Kirk Nahra to Testify on Health Care “Big Data” at Privacy and Security Workgroup Virtual Hearing
Kirk J. Nahra, chair of Wiley Rein’s Privacy Practice and co-chair of the Health Care Practice, will testify before a government advisory panel next week about health care “big data”—which is revolutionizing the delivery of medical services and creating increasingly complex challenges related to cybersecurity and patient privacy.
The virtual hearing before the Privacy and Security Workgroup is scheduled for 1pm–5pm on Monday, December 8. The workgroup—whose members include government officials and industry representatives—is tasked with developing policy recommendations for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), located within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Mr. Nahra’s testimony will focus on current laws surrounding the health-related uses of big data—the large, interconnected databases of personal information collected by the government and companies. He will discuss laws that may apply to health care big data outside of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), such as the Federal Trade Commission Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. He will also address gaps that may exist in current legal protections related to health care big data.
The virtual hearing is open to the public and free of charge. Please click here to participate in the event online. Callers in the U.S. can also dial in, toll-free, at 877-705-6006. International callers can dial in at 201-689-8557.
