Wiley Rein Recognizes Karen Kincaid Scholarship Winners at Summer Event

August 6, 2015

Wiley Rein LLP hosted an outing yesterday for current and past recipients of the Federal Communication Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation’s Karen A. Kincaid Scholarship Award. The event featured an evening of networking and mentoring with Wiley Rein lawyers at the Washington Mystics basketball game. The annual memorial scholarship, established in 2009, pays tribute to Karen Kincaid, a partner in the firm’s Communications Practice who died in the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

The award recipients—chosen for the qualities that Ms. Kincaid embodied including warmth, compassion, intellectual curiosity, and drive—are Anthonya James (2015), Raul Moreno (2014), Earica Parrish (2013), Angel Brock (2012), Sixin Li (2011) Juan Lara (2010), and Mayron Yohannes (2009). Established by the FCBA Foundation and funded by Wiley Rein and friends of Ms. Kincaid, the $24,000 scholarship is the foundation’s largest annual award for graduating high school students. The scholarship is given to a Washington, DC area high school student each year to help with tuition costs so they can attend the college of their choice. The recipients have gone on to major in financial and budget analysis, as well as journalism, and two have already graduated from college.

“We’re thrilled to be able to spend time with these inspiring young adults, and for them to get to know each other,” said Wiley Rein Telecommunications Practice chair R. Michael Senkowski, a friend and colleague of Ms. Kincaid. “Yesterday was a great opportunity for us to strengthen our bond and strengthen our relationship as mentors as they move forward in their studies and careers. We look forward to hosting this event and honoring these students on a regular basis. Their success in college and in life is a wonderful tribute to Karen’s memory.”

Prior to joining Wiley Rein in 1993, Ms. Kincaid had served as a Senior Attorney-Advisor for the Federal Communications Commission’s Private Radio Bureau. She also clerked for the Honorable J. Smith Hensley, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and the Honorable Leo Oxenberger, Chief Judge, Iowa Court of Appeals. She received her B.A. from Central College and her J.D. from Drake University.
