WRF to Oversee New Steel Scrap Industry Coalition

February 18, 2004

Wiley Rein & Fielding will administer a new Washington-based coalition examining the impact of rapid increases in steel scrap costs on downstream consumers, American Metal Market LLP reports on AMM.com.

The Emergency Steel Scrap Coalition has launched a website, , and will seek participation among a broad group of industry associations and steel consuming companies. WRF attorney Alan H. Price said the coalition will evaluate various legal options available under U.S. trade law, including domestic scrap controls, actions against foreign scrap export restraints and negotiations with U.S. trading partners. The coalition also will conduct an economic study to determine the causes of, and possible solutions for, high ferrous scrap costs.

The study is expected to be complete in three or four weeks and will be incorporated into a final report.
