Charles Owen Verrill, Jr., to Receive The American Lawyer Global Legal Award for Investment Arbitration Related to Zimbabwe Land Reform
Washington, DC—The American Lawyer will honor Wiley Rein’s Charles Owen Verrill, Jr. among a select group of honorees at its upcoming fourth annual Global Legal Awards. The September 26 awards ceremony at New York City’s Gotham Hall will recognize law firms, companies, and governments that “played a substantial role in the most distinguished international work” performed in 2015 across a wide range of legal disciplines. Mr. Verrill and his co-counsel in London will receive the “Global Dispute of the Year: Investment Arbitration (Africa)” award for their critical work representing a Swiss-German family whose farms and forest holdings were seized by the Zimbabwean government during the country’s “fast-track land reform” of the 2000s.
A ruling earlier this year by the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) determined that the family’s holdings had been illegally seized in violation of investment treaties and international law. In addition to awarding specific performance, the tribunal held the claimants were owed at least $130 million and possibly more than $310 million in restitution for their losses.
This is the second major honor for Mr. Verrill and his co-counsel for their work on this significant matter. In March, Global Arbitration Review (GAR) gave the lawyers a GAR Award in the category of “International arbitration practice that impressed in the past year.”
Mr. Verrill serves as consulting counsel at Wiley Rein, regularly representing clients on all aspects of international trade and investment law and policy. He is regularly named as a leading lawyer by Chambers Global and Chambers USA.
