Kirk Nahra Comments on Retirement of CMS Program Integrity Director
Kirk J. Nahra, chair of Wiley Rein’s Privacy Practice and co-chair of its Health Care Practice, was quoted by Bloomberg BNA’s Health Care Fraud Report in an article yesterday about the recent departure of Dr. Peter Budetti from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Dr. Budetti, who retired from the agency on September 11, had served as director of CMS’s Center for Program Integrity (CPI) since the center was created in 2010. The CPI coordinates Medicare and Medicaid program integrity efforts under one department.
Mr. Nahra said CMS has engaged in a wide variety of anti-fraud efforts during Dr. Budetti’s tenure. Although not all of those efforts have worked out, “there has been an ongoing effort to be creative and proactive in dealing with a substantial health care problem,” Mr. Nahra told Bloomberg BNA.
“We can only hope that CMS will continue to focus attention on these issues without Dr. Budetti’s leadership to maintain a strong, visible role in fighting health care fraud,” Mr. Nahra said.
