Jan Baran Discusses Supreme Court’s Campaign Finance Ruling on The Diane Rehm Show
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was a featured guest today on NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show discussing yesterday’s Supreme Court of the United States decision on campaign contributions.
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down individual limits on contributions to political campaigns, political action committees (PACs), and parties. The discussion on the program focused on the role of money in politics and the government’s interest in curbing corruption.
“I think the result in this case was predictable and is consistent with the court’s jurisprudence,” Mr. Baran said. “Going back to the original major decision of Buckley v. Valeo, the Court has always rejected the notion that the First Amendment would allow regulating money in politics in order to accomplish equalization.”
