Kirk Nahra Discusses Implications of FTC Privacy Enforcement Action
Kirk J. Nahra, chair of Wiley Rein’s Privacy Practice, was quoted yesterday in a Law360 article about the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) aggressive pursuit this year of companies in response to alleged data breaches. Snapchat, for example, agreed in May to settle FTC charges that the company’s failure to secure its mobile messaging application enabled hackers to obtain 4.6 million customer user names and phone numbers.
“The Snapchat case is an important reminder for everyone to use common sense and be smart about new technologies,” Mr. Nahra said. “Promises and commitments that may seem hard to believe often are not accurate. The FTC’s action was an important action to reinforce the necessity of getting these technology commitments correct.”
