Jan Baran Discusses Senator Menendez's Friendship Defense
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted by USA Today in an article published April 3, discussing Sen. Robert Menendez’s friendship defense against allegations that he accepted bribes from Salomon Melgen in exchange for political favors.
Menendez and his attorneys are claiming that the two men are longtime friends and that the actions were exchanges between friends, rather than acts of bribery.
Mr. Baran, who weighed in on the defense, pointed out one key question: "What else did Sen. Menendez do for his friend that wasn't the official act of a senator? The burden of proof is on the government."
