Robert Smith Quoted in Franchise Times Article About Wahlburgers’ Expansion Plans
Robert A. Smith, chair of Wiley Rein’s Franchise Practice, was quoted in the May 2015 issue of Franchise Times, in an article about the expansion of Wahlburgers, the popular restaurant co-owned by brothers Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg.
Wahlburgers envisions about 300 U.S. locations as part of its expansion plans, according to the article. The original Wahlburgers is located in Hingham, Massachusetts, and a second Wahlburgers opened in Toronto last year.
Mr. Smith, who is franchise counsel for Wahlburgers, said restaurants with only one open unit usually aren’t good candidates for franchising—but Wahlburgers was an exception.
“Paul, the chef brother, is a real foodie,” Mr. Smith said. “He’s dedicated to the food.” He added that the concept is “well thought-out and well executed,” and noted that Wahlburgers’ chief executive officer is a former Panera executive.
“This is not your typical start-up,” Mr. Smith said. “These people have a world of experience so they’re many steps down the road.”
