Election Law Co-Chair Jan Baran Comments on Gov. Perry's Repayment for the Use of Private Jets
Jan Baran, co-chair of the Election Law & Government Ethics Practice was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article commenting on the underpayment by Texas Governor Rick Perry’s campaign for use of several supporters’ private jets for campaigning. Governor Perry’s campaign said that it would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to properly reimburse supporters for the use of their private jets and would also have to amend its financial filings—a mistake his campaign says was made due to a misunderstanding of campaign rules. “The embarrassing part of this is it just shows the traps a beginner in a very complicated [federal] election environment can fall into,” Mr. Baran said. In the past, many presidential candidates used supporters’ private jets but most have stopped due to the tightening of election laws in 2007. The law requires that candidates reimburse the owners the equivalent of the cost of hiring a charter.
