Michael Toner Discusses the Consequences of the Edwards Verdict
Wiley Rein Election Law & Government Ethics Practice co-chair Michael Toner was interviewed by the Associated Press after former North Carolina senator John Edwards was acquitted on one count of corruption and a mistrial was declared on five other counts with the jury remaining deadlocked.
Mr. Toner said it would be a mistake to conclude that the failed prosecution means campaign finance violations will not be prosecuted. “There’s no question that there were relatively unique facts in the Edwards case,” Mr. Toner said, pointing to other areas in campaign law where wrongdoing is more clear cut, such as accepting contributions from foreign donors.
