Bloomberg BNA Covers Practising Law Institute Conference on Corporate Political Activities
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in an article published September 11 in Bloomberg BNA about the recent Practising Law Institute (PLI) conference on Corporate Political Activities.
According to the article, the acting general counsel of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Daniel Petalas, said the FEC has received a record number of enforcement complaints. While the FEC can bring civil enforcement cases, the U.S. Department of Justice is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases.
Mr. Baran, the longtime co-chair of the PLI’s annual Corporate Political Activities conference, said during the conference that in the era of unlimited fundraising for political action committees, some political operatives have become “cavalier,” and added that “everyone should be clear that there are consequence,” such as possible criminal prosecution for those who flaunt the law.
