Caleb Burns Discusses Outlook for FARA Enforcement Following High-Profile Verdict

Bloomberg Law
September 10, 2019

Caleb P. Burns, partner in Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted by Bloomberg Law in a September 6 article about the outlook for enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) following last week’s high-profile acquittal of attorney Gregory Craig in a FARA-related case.

The September 4 verdict is unlikely to deter the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) from continuing its aggressive pursuit of FARA-related charges against individuals suspected of illegal foreign lobbying activity, according to the article.

“This particular prosecution got whittled down to a point where it sort of fell apart, but
the issue of foreign influence in our politics is as acute as ever,” said Mr. Burns. He added that he sees “no reason why the department would back off on prosecuting” FARA violations.

“The alarm has been sounded and people are listening,” Mr. Burns said.
