Jan Baran Discusses Roy Moore Complaint Regarding Alabama Senate Race Outcome
Jan Witold Baran, partner and co-chair in Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in a December 28 article in The Wall Street Journal regarding Democrat Doug Jones being certified by the State of Alabama as the winner of a special election for U.S. Senate. Republican Roy Moore had filed an 11th-hour legal challenge regarding the outcome, alleging the election was “fraudulent,” but the complaint was dismissed by Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick, who argued the court did not have jurisdiction.
“Based on its merits, I don’t think this lawsuit is likely to go anywhere,” Mr. Baran said. Mr. Baran is a former general counsel to the Republican National Committee and to the George H.W. Bush campaign in 1988, and is a former chairman of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Election Law.
