Stephen Claeys Speaks on WITA Panel About Implications of a NAFTA Withdrawal
Stephen J. Claeys, a partner in Wiley Rein’s International Trade Practice, was a featured panelist at a November 15 Washington International Trade Association (WITA) event focusing on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Politico Pro covered the panel and cited comments made by Mr. Claeys.
The discussion explored what could happen if President Trump announces that he plans to withdraw the United States from NAFTA. While members of Congress could try, through various legislative measures, to discourage a NAFTA withdrawal, Mr. Claeys said it would be difficult to pass such legislation with enough House and Senate votes to override a likely presidential veto.
Congress could also ask the U.S. International Trade Commission to conduct a study on the economic impact of withdrawing from NAFTA, according to Mr. Claeys, who previously served as Trade Counsel for the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee on Trade.
