Wiley Rein’s Brian Sylvester Named a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Fellow
Washington, DC—Wiley Rein LLP’s Brian P. Sylvester, special counsel in the firm’s Food, Drug, and Medical Device Law and Consumer Product Regulation practices, has been named a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Fellow. As a member of the 2019 class of LCLD Fellows, Mr. Sylvester will be participating in a landmark program created by LCLD to identify, train, and advance the next generation of leaders in the legal profession.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for Brian,” said Managing Partner Peter D. Shields. “He has shown strong leadership advocating for clients on a range of complex and first-impression issues involving regulation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
“As an LCLD Fellow, Brian will be well-positioned to further develop his professional skills and connect with peers who are committed to creating a more positive, inclusive profession.”
Mr. Sylvester’s practice focuses on the food & beverage, dietary supplement, agricultural biotechnology, and veterinary biologics sectors. As counsel to household brands and start-ups, he provides strategic advice to facilitate the commercialization of new products and to navigate potential crises, including recalls and unanticipated regulatory scrutiny. He also regularly advises corporations and industry trade associations on strategies to shape federal and state policies and legislation.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Sylvester was a regulatory lawyer at the USDA. He is deeply knowledgeable regarding the increasingly complex and high-stakes regulatory environment confronting FDA- and USDA-regulated entities. He is a frequent speaker on trending regulatory topics and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and a number of industry-leading publications.
Outside of the firm, Mr. Sylvester serves as Vice President of the Cornell Black Lawyers Alumni Network (CBLAN) and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Harmony DC Public Charter Schools. Mr. Sylvester received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Dartmouth College and his law degree from Cornell Law School.
The LCLD Fellows Program offers participants a rich year of relationship-building, in-person training, peer-group projects, and extensive contact with LCLD’s top leadership. Founded in 2009, LCLD is a growing organization of more than 265 corporate general counsel and law firm managing partners who are personally committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive legal profession. The LCLD Fellows program, which has trained more than 1,000 mid-career attorneys since 2011, is one of LCLD’s most important initiatives.
