October 26, 2023

Washington, DC – Wiley, a preeminent DC law firm, announced that Kathleen Cooperstein has joined the firm’s White Collar Defense & Government Investigations Practice.

“Kathleen has a distinguished reputation, having worked both at the Department of Justice and in private practice. She is particularly well-known for her work as a trial lawyer within the health care sectors,” said White Collar Practice chair Ralph J. Caccia. “Her experience will add additional depth in helping our clients navigate the ever growing enforcement and regulatory challenges faced by our life sciences and health care clients.”

Most recently, Cooperstein served as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Criminal Division, working in the Health Care Fraud unit for four years. At the DOJ, Cooperstein investigated and prosecuted complex health care fraud schemes affecting Medicare, Medicaid, and other government health care programs. Cooperstein also served a six-month detail to the Major Crimes unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

Earlier in her career, Cooperstein worked as a senior associate as part of the white collar defense teams at two large law firms with offices in Washington DC, where she focused on defending clients in both criminal and civil matters pertaining to the False Claims Act. She also served as a clerk to the Honorable Charles F. Lettow of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

“I’ve always admired and respected Wiley’s White Collar Practice, which is known globally for representing clients with comprehensive litigation strategies and tactics across a full spectrum of industries,” said Cooperstein. “I am looking forward to diversifying my practice and helping Wiley’s clients minimize risk and resolve any enforcement actions that they may face.”

Cooperstein earned her J.D. from the Yale Law School and her B.A. from Virginia Tech.
